I'm a late bloomer at everything. Born in the lower rungs of society and raised as a foster kid, it took me a couple extra decades to establish a "normal life". I started college at 37, medical school at 42 and got my MD at 46. I now work at Loyola University Medical Center near Chicago and am also an assistant professor at the Stritch School of Medicine. I started running at 52 using Couch-to-5k and added in biking a bit later. I've done 23 half marathons in the 12 years since starting along with countless shorter races. I did my first (and only so far) full marathon at 60 and both my first duathlon (of two so far) and first (and only) Spartan at 62. Despite being older, slower and chubbier than most other athletes, and always coming in near the end, I don't care. I have the spirit of a competitor, the heart of a warrior and the joy of a child when it comes to sport. I'll be 65 this year and nowhere near "retired" from anything. Oh and I'm a Trekkie. I was 10 when the first Star Trek show premiered and even had a Star Trek themed wedding at 50 years old. Yeah, I'm a little different.
